She was born in Baku on the 20th of November 1960. In 1978 she graduated with honors from high school number 200 in the district of Nariman.

Gultekin was very good in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and always participated in the Olympic Competitions where she was always winning.

In 1983 she entered the Azerbaijan State Medical University and graduated from it in1989.  While studying, she worked as a nurse in the Military hospital of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs first as a junior nurse and then was promoted to the position of a head nurse.  After graduation of the University, she started working at the Emergency Station # 8. Later on, she continued her nursing career at the Urological hospital where she also worked as an anesthesiologist and won the deep respect of the doctors. Asgarova’s heart was full with anger after she learned about the events in Garabagh. On the 4th of April 4, 1992 she voluntarily went to the Front. Initially she participated in the battles of Turshsu village and then in Shusha. Under the hail of bullets she was helping the wounded men and trying to take them to a safer place and giving them first aid.

Lachin, Gubadli, Shusha were the places she was actively involved in the defense of the region. Gultekin Asgarova, after having gone through a long pass of battles and war, was killed in heavy fighting while serving her country near Aranzemin-Nakhchivanik on 20th of June 1992.

Asgarova was married with one daughter.

Asgarova Gultekin Melik was posthumously awarded the title of "National Hero of Azerbaijan" by the decree of the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan no. 20 on the 31st of November 1993.

 She was buried in the alley of Martyrs in Baku.

School # 200 is named after her and her bust was put there also. One of the ships in the Caspian Sea Shipment is named after the hero. And a Museum was established within the ship to honor and remember the heroine.

There is also a bust of her in front Baki Narimanov district Hospital where she used to work.
